AI Receptionist Alternatives: An Honest Side-by-Side

Most people searching for an alternative have hit one of two walls. Either the tool answers fine and nothing happens to the lead afterwards, or the configuration and upkeep landed on them and stayed there. Those are different problems, and they point at different products.

All prices below come from each vendor's own published pricing page, checked September 7, 2026. Prices in this category move; re-verify before you buy. Capability notes are limited to what each vendor states publicly — we have not run competitor bake-offs, and we are not going to invent scorecard rows.

What each one is genuinely good at

Dialzara ($29–$349) has the lowest published entry point of the group and is transparent about its metering: it prints its overage rates. If your call volume is genuinely small — the 60-minute Business Lite plan is one hour of talk time a month — it is the cheapest way to stop sending callers to voicemail.

Rosie ($49–$299) is the tidy small-business answering purchase. Read the tier boundary carefully: direct calendar booking, warm transfers and mid-call texts start on the $149 Scale plan, not the $49 one. If you specifically need booking, budget for Scale.

Goodcall ($79–$249 per agent) prices by agent with unlimited minutes and caps *unique customers* instead (100, 250 or 500 per month, then $0.50 each). That is an unusual and useful shape if you have long calls with a modest number of distinct people.

Smith.ai ($300–$2,100) is the one on this list that offers human-first handling as well as AI-first. If some of your callers genuinely need a person and hiring one is not on the table, that is a real advantage nothing else here matches. Its per-call plans (30, 90 or 300 calls) mean the arithmetic is about call count, not minutes.

NextPhone ($199–$599) sells the phone system and the answering together, with unlimited calls and no per-minute charge per its pricing page. If you were going to replace your business phone stack anyway, one bill for both is a reasonable simplification. CRM integrations and webhooks begin at the $299 Growth tier.

Autonomized combines customer records, tasks, pipeline, approvals, quotes and invoices with the AI workforce’s configured workflows. Compare the current workspace plans with the software, receptionist coverage and follow-up work your business actually needs.

Compare the work around the call

Because it is a different purchase, and we would rather say so than pretend the categories are the same.

Autonomized connects a tailored AI workforce with your customer records, tasks and approvals. Reception is one role within that workforce: the customer context can continue into sales follow-up, booking, quotes, secure payment requests and daily operations. People can keep managing the CRM and choose the actions that need review.

Evaluate the value using a real customer workflow, the work your team still needs to do, and your expected monthly cost. A feature list alone does not prove savings.

Where Autonomized stands, as of 2026-09-07

Your setup connects the relevant records, channels and actions with your business rules. Walk the workflow through a normal inquiry and an exception, confirm the result in the CRM, and choose the approvals and human handoffs before activation.

Capabilities are switched on for your account once the connections and workflow checks they depend on are complete, so activation is scheduled rather than immediate.

Which alternative fits which problem

  1. Calls hit voicemail and that is the whole problem. Buy the cheapest tool that clears your quality bar. Dialzara or Rosie. Keep the difference.
  2. Calls get answered but nothing gets booked. Check whether booking is on the tier you are actually buying — on more than one vendor here it is not on the entry plan.
  3. Some callers really need a human. Smith.ai's human-first option is the credible answer without hiring.
  4. You are replacing the phone system anyway. NextPhone bundles it.
  5. The problem is after the call — quotes unchased, records unwritten, invoices unsent. No answering tool fixes that, however good it sounds. That is the case for a platform, ours or someone else's, and the honest test is whether it removes work you can name.
  6. You resell services to other businesses. That is a partner conversation, not a plan on a pricing page. See agencies.

How to test before you switch

Test each vendor against the same three edge cases: a request outside your service area, a mid-call change of mind, and "is that confirmed or is someone calling me back?" Fifteen minutes of that tells you more than any comparison table, including this one.

Then compare against your own numbers, not a vendor's example workload. Your call minutes, your call count, the share of enquiries you normally win. Ours are on the pricing page, and the scope conversation starts with a setup brief.

FAQ

What is the cheapest AI receptionist? Of the vendors checked on September 7, 2026, Dialzara publishes the lowest entry plan at $29 a month for 60 included receptionist minutes, with overage at $0.48 a minute.

Which AI receptionist offers human backup? Smith.ai publishes both AI-first and human-first receptionist handling on its pricing page. The others in this comparison, including us, do not staff human answering.

How should I compare a workspace plan with a phone-answering service? Compare the same workload and required outcome. Include answering, customer records, approvals, follow-up, setup and usage. Check each provider's current pricing and test the workflow before deciding.

Can I keep my phone number? Number porting is possible but it is scoped migration work with its own authority and cutover steps, not something a signup form completes. Ask any vendor, including us, exactly who does it and when.

Do you migrate our data from the old system? Migration is scoped per client: it requires authority, a supported data map, preserved consent and suppression records, successful reconciliation and an agreed cutover. Your existing systems can keep running for workflows that have not moved.
